Learning from Daniel: Habits of Unwavering Faith
Among biblical figures, Daniel stands out. He was not someone who kept his faith in a comfortable environment, but rather, he held onto a reverent life before God even in unfamiliar lands and cultures. Therefore, Daniel's story offers great comfort and challenge to us today. As the world changes rapidly and it seems difficult to uphold our faith, it’s important to revisit the habits Daniel practiced to stand firm before God.
Daniel 1:8 says, "But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king's food or with the wine that he drank." Faith is not only revealed in passionate moments. Rather, faith begins with small decisions. Before stepping onto a grand stage, Daniel first dedicated his heart to God. Keeping faith in the world is not about accomplishing something monumental once, but about choosing to stand with God in everyday choices.
We are similar. Will we read today’s scripture, postpone it because we’re busy, turn to God when we’re weary, or distract ourselves with other things? These small, repeated choices ultimately shape the direction of our lives. Therefore, starting the day by checking the Scripture for today is more important than we might think. Instead of lofty goals, a heart that says "I will read today’s Word today" helps sustain faith over the long term.
Another characteristic of Daniel was prayer. Daniel 6:10 records, "When he knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem; he got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously." What stands out here is "as he had done previously." He didn’t start praying suddenly because of a crisis; his regular prayer habit continued even in difficult times. Those who stand before God on ordinary days do not waver on challenging days.
The same applies to Bible reading. Some days, the text flows easily; on others, even a single chapter feels overwhelming. But what matters more than perfection is consistency. If a verse or phrase strikes you while reading, don’t just pass by—hold onto it. For example, if a verse from Daniel touches your heart, revisit it slowly in , and even jot down a short meditation. Recording the grace received that day becomes a great strength over time.
