Meditation on Genesis 16: Faith in Waiting

The overall flow of the chapter is clear. Sarai gives her servant Hagar to Abram to have a child. Although this was a common custom in that culture, God's way of fulfilling His promise was based on obedience, not human customs. Abram listened to Sarai and went to Hagar, and when Hagar became pregnant, relationships quickly unraveled. Sarai felt scorned, Hagar suffered, and she ran to the wilderness. The attempt to solve problems on human terms only brought bigger wounds.

The key figures are Abram, Sarai, and Hagar. Despite receiving the promise, Abram wavers in silence. Sarai, in the pain of long waiting, devises a human solution. Hagar, in her vulnerability, is the first to suffer hurt. As we read Genesis 16, rather than rushing to judge these individuals, we recognize parts of ourselves in each of them. We may claim to believe in God's promises but, when faced with frustration, we tend to try to produce results ourselves. Such choices often burden the most vulnerable.

But the focus of this chapter isn't only on human failure. The angel of the Lord finds Hagar in the wilderness. In Genesis 16:13, Hagar confesses, "You are the God who sees me," for she realized that God saw her even when she felt abandoned. Though she seemed cast aside, she was not truly forsaken. Even amidst tangled human relationships, God saw her. The wilderness, filled with frustration, fear, and loneliness, was never outside God's gaze.

Here, a significant application for modern believers emerges. When God's promises seem delayed, we often slip into taking shortcuts that seem plausible, rather than falling into sin itself. We may not outright deny God, but we grasp at solutions that sideline Him. This applies to career, marriage, children, finances, and relationships. We pray but should reflect whether our actual decisions are driven by anxiety.
